Ex-funeral home director pleads guilty as accessory to 1st degree murder - Pueblo Chieftain
Feb 6, 2017Anthony WrightAnthony Wright, 46, of Canon City pleaded guilty Thursday to the felony charge of accessory to first-degree murder in connection with the Oct. 12, 2012, homicide of Fowler funeral home director Byron Griffy, 76.Griffy was found with a gunshot wound to the back of his head at the farmhouse he owned on County Road 4.5 near U.S. 50.The plea agreement calls for a sentence capped at probation without jail; all other terms and conditions of the sentence will be left open to the judge.Sentencing is set for March 14.Wright, who was originally charged with first-degree murder, stood trial in July 2015, but it ended in a mistrial after the jurors were unable to reach a verdict. According to court documents, Griffy died of a gunshot wound to the base of his skull.Wright and his life partner, the late Charles Giebler, who was the mayor of Florence, were owners of the Charles-Anthony Funeral home in Florence at the time of Griffy’s death.Wright and Giebler allegedly were involved in the homicide together.Giebler, 52, died on Jan. 25, 2013, from coronary artery disease and before the investigation was complete. He had told others he knew his arrest was imminent, according to an affidavit.Wright remains free on $250,000 bail pending sentencing.tharmon@chieftain.com...
